Dr. Burnette received her undergraduate degree from Clemson University and her Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia in 1986. She completed her internship at West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown, WV.  Dr. Burnette also has a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. 

She has had a diverse career: she has worked in inpatient settings, including within two VA psychiatric hospitals. She has also worked in outpatient settings, including 8 years as a private practitioner and 8 years directing and supervising within the in-house training clinic at the University of South Carolina. She has worked as an academic/researcher in both clinical psychology and public health.

Dr. Burnette works onlt with adults. Her approach is a mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy call Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She also works with couples and other relationship dyads utilizing both ACT and Emotionally-Focused Therapy approaches. Dr. Burnette primarily focuses her practice on anxiety, depressed mood, trauma, grief, end-of-life issues, adjustment to life stresses/stress management, and couples/relationship issues.

While Dr. Burnette called Columbia home during much of her formative years, she lived in many other states before returning home to be close to her aging parents. She has one adult child, Ian, who lives in Michigan. In addition to her one human child, Dr. Burnette has six adopted “children” including two dogs, one cat, and three chickens. She enjoys house projects and is an avid gardener.
