Dr. Anna-Leigh Powell earned her Doctor of Psychology degree at Mercer University in Atlanta GA. She completed her pre-doctoral residency in Health/Adult Psychology at Indiana University School of Medicine and then completed an APA accredited fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she stayed to work as faculty for a year before moving to Columbia with her fiancé and joining Lake Psychological Services.
As a Clinical Psychologist trained in Health Psychology, Dr. Powell has trained in behavioral sleep medicine, psycho-oncology, behavioral cardiology, and behavioral weight management. She provides evidence-informed interventions, tailored to the unique needs of complex medical patients. She offers Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) and applies a Cognitive Therapy approach for medicalized traumas such as an ICU stay or a procedure. Dr. Powell is proficient in pre-surgical psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery and offers follow up brief behavioral intervention to help patients prepare for surgery to improve post-surgical outcomes. She has worked extensively with end-stage-organ populations (heart, liver, and kidney) and she utilizes acceptance and mindfulness-based principles to assist patients as they adjust to a new diagnosis. Dr. Powell also enjoys helping people improve their health behaviors and can address binge eating, behavioral weight management, tobacco cessation, insomnia, anxiety, depression, mood disorders and stress management.
